This Sepik River sculpture originates from the villages and riverbanks of the Sepik River region in Papua, New Guinea. This is created by one of the various indigenous groups along the river, including those from the middle Ramu River and the Yuat River.

This piece is an original ancestor carving, featuring traditional oceanic art and tribal motifs and is deeply connected to the cultures and rituals of the communities.

The Sepik River sculpture depicts a standing male (as females exist but are unusual). This figure has an ovoid head that droops forward and limbs that are slightly flexed. This Sepik sculpture has an enormously long/exaggerated nose, which signifies masculinity (females have short noses).

Please be advised that the wear is consistent with age and use. Since wood is an organic material, it shrinks across grain with age so you will find there are age-appropriate tension cracks (as shown in pictures) as well as some slight loss of paint/wood chips (also shown in pictures).
