Bow rockers were introduced in the 17th century and as their name implies, they are rocking horses with four limbs extending from a bow-shaped base, a base that is similar to that of a bow and arrow. The bow-shaped base of the horse rocker allows it to rock back and forth, however, this floor-sized rocker horse is truly more of a decorative accent. This rocker horse has been artfully hand carved from an assortment of hardwoods and the bow rocker displays a playful carved scroll design.
This rocking horse is in great structural condition with age-appropriate wear. There is one minor wood chip on the back of the bow-shaped base (as shown in pictures). It does appear the horse was hand carved in segments and then assembled (head, legs, tail, bow rocker). Since wood is an organic material, it shrinks across grain with age so you will find there was an age-appropriate tension crack on the torso's side (please refer to picture). There is also hairline cracks at the joints where the varying pieces were assembled (as shown in pictures). None of this affects the structural integrity. It is believed that this was handcrafted in Indonesia sometime in the mid 20th-century; maker unknown.
